The problem.
Existing night trains are very sustainable compared to aviation, and see increased interest from travelers. But existing problems convert demand into losses for operators. Four problems make night train economics difficult, and existing trains at most solve two:
Not enough capacity
Too few passengers per railcar means high cost per ticket.Too little privacy and comfort
Passengers will not pay enough for a product that feels significantly worse than flying or a hotel. No good solution for solo travelers
A large part of the market is traveling alone, but today they often have to choose between sharing with strangers or paying for an expensive private compartment.Trains only run at night
Most night-train rolling stock is designed only for overnight use and sits idle for much of the day.
operators struggle to earn attractive margins, ticket prices stay high, and night trains remain a niche despite strong demand for an alternative to flying.
The solution.
We solve this problem with technology that rethinks the railway vehicle itself. The vehicle determines how many passengers can travel, how comfortable and private the journey is, and whether it can be used efficiently both day and night. In short, they determine whether a night train can be economically viable and compete with aviation.
Luna Rail develops a solution that fits many private cabins into a railcar, while maximizing comfort and making the same space equally useful for sitting during the day and sleeping at night. Our solution is focused on optimizing the vehicle to make night trains profitable for operators, and attractive and affordable for travelers.
The market.
Europe's short-haul aviation market is €70B in annual ticket revenue. Roughly 35% of those routes, €25B, are connectable by rail at distances under 1,500 km. A third of travelers on those routes will realistically switch if provided with a competitive night train offer. Combined with induced demand and transfers from ground transport, there is a market of more than €10B in Europe alone.
The rail fleet behind the night train operators represents about a third of the ticket revenue, which is Luna Rails addressable market in Europe.
Night trains today serve only about 5% of the routes they could. The market has room for 20x growth.

Roadmap.
2025-25: Iterative development in the lab, extensive user tests and feasibility studies
2026: Prototype on real track, research and development
2028-29: market entry with certified, refurbished rail vehicle
2030 onward: scaling to hundreds of vehicles
Climate impact.
Luna Rail will enable night trains to shift long-distance travel from planes and cars to rail. Each railcar will avoid around 2,000 tonnes of CO₂e per year.
For a fleet of 120 railcars, this will amount to around 240,000 tonnes of CO₂e avoided every year.
